Upwey Archies

See our Latest News page for 2023 Winners, Portrait Map and how to vote for the Community Favourite

Inspired by the Archibald Prize, the Upwey Archies is an annual community portrait event organised by Upwey Community Group, in partnership with Burrinja Cultural Centre. A sensational opportunity for artists and aspiring artists in the local community to create an original artwork celebrating a person special to them, or to the Hills. Their works will be publicly displayed on the walls and windows in the Upwey, Main Street shops.

These annual awards - Winner, Highly Commended, Heart (Encouragement) & Packing Room Awards are awarded in both the Open & Youth (14 years & under) categories. There is also a 'Community Favourite' Award with members of the community encouraged to vote for their favourite portrait. The works are judged by an art expert (last year's winner), and awards officially announced at a special celebration in the Upwey Village Square.

The Upwey Archies Portraits bring a real 'sparkle' to the village for the month. It’s heaps of fun seeing all the entries in the shop windows in Main Street every year and catching the excited comments as you walk past.
